If you haven’t been following the past 3 years or so of #ElmhurstHooplah and our work to protect the Human Right to Grow Food Year-Round in DuPage County (Illinois), you can get caught up at this link, or you can watch the video below.

(Scroll down for the news about Joel Salatin).

TL;DR

Nicole emailed Joel asking for his advice.

Dear Mr. Salatin of Polyface Farm,
I am reaching out to get some assistance, guidance, or direction. My husband and I  live in a suburb of Chicago (Elmhurst), and didn’t think anything about putting a seasonal winter hoophouse over two of our beds through the winter – especially because nobody is outside in the winter. It has been about 3 years we have been fighting our municipal government and things have been very trying.

To see more about our case just Google “Nicole Virgil Hoop House Elmhurst”.

Thank you for the consideration.

Nicole Virgil

… and he added his name to the continually growing list of Elmhurst hoophouse supporters,

encouraging her to PRACTICE CIVIL DISOBEDIENCE to protect her Right to Grow Food…

Hi Nicole—
Well you are a hero.  Congratulations and well done.
What would I do?  Nothing.  I would not take it down; I would not ask permission. I would just do it, use it, and forget the government.  The fact that others are up in the community shows a clear selective prejudice—not necessarily because of race, but for all you know, you could have an influential busy-body neighbor who makes calls of complaints.
The fact that they are not pressing the issue with the other membrane owners gives you tremendous precedent for doing nothing.  You can’t have selective enforcement of a regulation.  Failure to enforce gives legal tacit approval for the practice.  I think you have an extremely strong position and I’d just leave them alone, go away, quit agitating, and see what they do.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                Sometimes giving these folks some breathing room to save face and think can give you lots more freedom than being in their face making demands.  They are just people too, who put their pants on one leg at a time. From the newspaper accounts, it looks like you’re getting lots of support and you’re saying all the right things.  I can’t add any better arguments than the ones you’re using.
So just carry on and enjoy your greenhouse.  It’s extremely attractive.  Kudos.

Enjoy your lettuce.

Blessings,
Joel Salatin

Well, it seems like we can go die happy now, #swoon.
